Goodnight Jesusis a board book that is gentle and sweet and repetitive in just the right way for the last bedtime story of the night. The rhyming text follows a baby giving goodnight kisses. The baby kisses Jesus and Mary, saints from Bible stories, Mom and Dad and brothers, Grandma’s photo, and a stuffed bunny. Baby even blows a kiss to the goldfish!
But the most remarkable thing about the book, the thing that makes it truly exceptional, is the baby’s family. The little one has blond hair and big blue eyes. Neither of the parents is blond, nor are any of the three brothers. The parents could be Greek or Palestinian or Lebanese. The brothers are each of a different race: one is Black, one Asian, and one perhaps Hispanic.
This is the only picture book I know of that shows a transracial adoptive family. November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Goodnight Jesus is a great book for the month – and for bedtime all year round.
